A viral outbreak in a poultry flock is frightening because there is no tablet that kills the virus. Prevention (vaccination and biosecurity) is the real protection, and once birds are sick the job is to support them and keep losses down. That is where Virocon, a herbal (phytobiotic) antiviral support from IMN Pyrophos, fits in. This guide explains what it is, when to use it, what it contains, the label dose, how to give it, and what it cannot do. If you are searching for poultry viral diseases treatment, read the “supportive care, not a replacement” section before anything else.

What is Virocon?

Virocon is a phytobiotic antiviral support for poultry. It combines herbal antioxidants, capsicum, garlic and allium extracts, anti-inflammatory ingredients, vitamins E and C, and probiotics. The label positions it as supportive care in viral outbreaks, and it helps reduce mortality. It is given through drinking water. It is not a vaccine, and it is not a cure for the virus.

When and why to use Virocon

The label lists these viral conditions where Virocon is used as supportive care:

  • IBD (Gumboro): damages the immune organ (bursa) of young birds. See also our guide on the winter broiler medicine schedule.
  • ND (Newcastle disease, Ranikhet): respiratory, nervous and digestive signs, with sudden high deaths.
  • IB (infectious bronchitis): coughing, sneezing and rales, and in layers a drop in egg quality. Read our infectious bronchitis guide.
  • IBH (inclusion body hepatitis), LPAI (low pathogenic avian influenza), CIA (chicken infectious anaemia) and Marek’s disease.

Use it when your vet or a post-mortem points to a viral outbreak and you want to support the flock while the outbreak runs, not after the flock is already lost. If you do not know what is killing your birds, get a post-mortem first. Do not guess the disease.

Virocon dose (label)

There are two ways to give it. Both are label doses.

MethodDose (label)When
By body weight1 g per 5 kg body weightMorning, in fresh water
By water volume3 g per litre of waterMorning, in fresh water

Worked example by body weight (calculated from the label dose and the 500 g price of ₹579, about ₹1.16 per gram): for 1,000 birds averaging 1 kg, the body weight is 1,000 kg, so you need 200 g, which costs about ₹232 (about ₹0.23 per bird). For 1,000 birds averaging 2 kg, you need 400 g, about ₹463 (about ₹0.46 per bird). The label dose we have does not state a fixed number of days, so confirm the course length with your vet or on WhatsApp.

How to give Virocon, step by step

  1. Do it in the morning. The label says to give it in the morning.
  2. Use fresh water. Weigh the dose and dissolve it in fresh drinking water.
  3. Make sure the birds finish it in 3–4 hours. Plan the water volume so that the medicated water is gone within 3–4 hours, then go back to normal water.
  4. Keep feed and water easy to reach. Sick birds will not walk far, so check that every bird can drink.
  5. Write down the day, the dose and the mortality. This helps your vet to judge how the outbreak is moving.

Supportive care, not a replacement for vaccination and biosecurity

This is the most important point in the article. A viral disease is controlled by prevention, and Virocon sits beside that plan; it does not replace it.

  • Vaccination first. Follow the vaccination schedule your vet has set for IBD, ND, IB and Marek’s (Marek’s is given at the hatchery). A phytobiotic does not do the job of a vaccine.
  • Biosecurity every day. Footbaths, restricted visitors, no sharing of equipment between sheds, clean water, safe disposal of dead birds, and all-in all-out with proper downtime.
  • Shed management. Dry litter, enough fresh air and the right temperature lower stress, and stressed birds suffer most in an outbreak. Our winter broiler management guide covers this.
  • Your vet. Get the disease confirmed. If bacteria such as E. coli or Mycoplasma join in, your vet decides about any antibiotic and its withdrawal period.

What not to do

  • Do not use Virocon instead of vaccination, and do not skip a vaccine because you have the product.
  • Do not expect it to cure the virus. It is supportive care to help reduce mortality.
  • Do not change the dose on your own. Stay with 1 g per 5 kg body weight or 3 g per litre.
  • Do not leave medicated water in the line all day. Plan for the birds to finish it in 3–4 hours.
  • Do not mix it in stale or dirty water. Use fresh water.
  • Do not wait for deaths to climb before you call your vet.

Common mistakes

  • Starting late. Farmers often reach for a supportive product only when the shed is already full of dead birds. Start as soon as the outbreak is suspected, together with your vet’s advice.
  • Treating every cough as viral. Coughing can be ammonia, a bacterial infection or a viral disease. A post-mortem tells you which.
  • Dosing by guess. Weigh the powder and know the flock’s body weight or the water used.
  • Using the product but dropping biosecurity. The virus keeps coming back through boots, vehicles, crates and shared tools.
  • No records. Without daily mortality and signs, it is hard to see whether the outbreak is slowing.
