Your cow or buffalo eats well, but she does not come into heat, does not hold after AI, or her milk and fat keep falling. Many farmers spend thousands on repeat injections and AI before checking the cheapest thing first: minerals. Green fodder, straw and grain do not give a milking animal all the minerals she needs, especially phosphorus, zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, iodine and selenium. A good mineral mixture, given every day in the right dose, is one of the lowest-cost ways to get better heat, conception, milk and health. Here is what it does, how to spot a shortage, how much to give, and how to choose one.

What does a mineral mixture do? The main benefits

  • Heat and conception: phosphorus, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine and selenium are needed for normal heat cycles, ovulation and holding the pregnancy. Shortage is a common cause of anoestrus (no heat), silent heat and repeat breeding, especially in buffaloes.
  • More milk and better fat/SNF: minerals run the rumen bugs and the body’s enzymes. A mineral-short animal does not convert feed into milk well.
  • Healthy calving: fewer cases of retained placenta and weak labour, and stronger, healthier calves.
  • Immunity and udder health: zinc, selenium and vitamin E help the body fight infections, including mastitis.
  • Bones, hooves and coat: strong bones, fewer hoof problems, and a shiny coat instead of a rough, dull one.
  • Calves and heifers grow faster and reach breeding age sooner.

Benefits on heat and conception take time: usually 2–3 months of daily feeding, because the body has to rebuild its stores.

Signs your animals are short of minerals

What you seeMineral often involved
Licking walls, eating soil, cloth or bones (pica)Phosphorus, salt
No heat for months after calving, silent heat, repeat breedingPhosphorus, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine
Rough, dull coat, faded hair colour (especially around the eyes)Copper, zinc, cobalt
Retained placenta, weak calvesSelenium, vitamin E, calcium
Cracked hooves, skin problems, slow wound healingZinc
Poor appetite, slow growth in calvesCobalt, phosphorus

These signs can also come from worms, poor feeding or disease. If many animals in the herd show them, minerals are a likely part of the problem. Deworming plus daily minerals often fixes a lot of it.

How much mineral mixture to give each day

Always follow the dose on the pack, because strength differs a lot between brands. As a rough guide for an ordinary (non-chelated) mineral mixture:

AnimalUsual daily amount
Adult cow or buffaloabout 50 g
High-yielding cow or buffalo50–60 g, as per pack
Heiferabout 25 g
Calfabout 10–15 g
Goat or sheepabout 5–10 g

A chelated mineral mixture is absorbed much better, so the dose is far smaller (often around 10 g for an adult animal). Small dose does not mean weak.

  • Mix it into the concentrate (daana) or a little chokar. Do not sprinkle it on dry fodder; much of it falls off.
  • Give it every day, all year, to milking, dry and pregnant animals and to heifers. A 10-day course once in a while does not work.
  • Give common salt separately (about 25–30 g a day for an adult). Mineral mixture is not a salt replacement.
  • Do not give 3–4 times the dose to “get quick results”. Too much copper or selenium can harm the animal.
  • In the last 3 weeks before calving, avoid extra calcium powders and lime. See our milk fever prevention guide.
Pyromin chelated mineral mixture for cows and buffaloes by IMN Pyrophos

Chelated mineral · small daily dose

Pyromin

Chelated iron, manganese, copper, zinc, iodine, selenium, chromium, cobalt and magnesium, with vitamins A, D3, E, K and B vitamins, biotin, methionine, lysine, lactobacillus and yeast extract. Supports milk production, fertility, conception, immunity and feed efficiency.

Dose: adult cow or buffalo 10 g per day; calves, sheep and goats 3 g per day. As a premix: 100 g per 100 kg concentrate.

1 kg ₹655MRP ₹1,190

One 1 kg pack of Pyromin at 10 g a day lasts one adult animal about 100 days, a little over ₹6 a day. A 5 kg pack (₹3,250) suits bigger farms.

Buffaloes need special attention

Buffaloes are well known for silent heat and long gaps between calvings, and the problem gets worse in summer and on straw-heavy rations. Phosphorus and trace mineral shortage is a big part of it. If your buffaloes are not showing heat 60–90 days after calving, start daily minerals, deworm, and get them checked by a vet. How to choose a good mineral mixture

  • Read the label: it should list phosphorus, zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, iodine and selenium, not just calcium and salt. A cheap mix that is mostly chalk and salt will not fix fertility problems.
  • Chelated or ordinary? Chelated minerals are bound to amino acids, so more of them are absorbed and less is wasted in the dung. They cost more per kg but the daily dose is much smaller.
  • Check the dose and cost per animal per day, not the price per kg.
  • Buy from a known company with a batch number and expiry date on the pack.
  • Want to make your own? See how to make mineral mixture for cows at home, and its limits.

Common mistakes

  • Giving minerals only when the animal is not coming into heat, and stopping after a few days
  • Giving it only to milking animals and skipping dry animals and heifers
  • Thinking “my animals eat green fodder, so they don’t need minerals”
  • Using salt or chuna (lime) in place of a mineral mixture
  • Not deworming. Worms eat up the benefit of good feed and minerals.

Quick answers

How many days before results? Coat and appetite often improve within weeks. Heat and conception usually take 2–3 months of daily feeding.

Can I give it to a pregnant animal? Yes, at the normal dose, through pregnancy. Only avoid extra calcium in the last 3 weeks before calving.

Can I mix it in water? Most mineral mixtures are made to be mixed in feed. Follow the pack.

Is mineral mixture a heat injection? No. It fixes a shortage. If an animal still does not come into heat after 2–3 months of good feeding, minerals and deworming, ask your vet to examine her.
