Buffalo milk dropping in winter? 8 simple fixes

How to Increase Buffalo Milk in Winter: 8 Practical Steps

भाषा:

Many farmers see buffalo milk drop as soon as the nights turn cold. The buffalo is the same, the feed is the same, yet the bucket is lighter. Winter changes how much a buffalo drinks, how much energy she spends keeping warm and how well her rumen works. The good news: most of this loss can be prevented with a few simple changes. Here are 8 practical steps.

1. Give lukewarm water, as much as she wants

Milk is mostly water. In winter buffaloes drink less because the water is cold, and milk falls with it. Offer fresh, lukewarm water two or three times a day, especially in the morning. Never leave her with only ice-cold water from an overnight tank.

2. Protect her from cold wind, not from sunlight

  • Cover the open sides of the shed with jute or plastic curtains at night, but keep a gap at the top for fresh air. A closed, damp shed brings pneumonia.
  • Keep the floor dry. Spread dry straw or bedding where she sits.
  • Let her sit in the sun during the day. Morning sun is the cheapest heater a farmer has.

3. Feed green fodder every day

October to March is berseem and oats season. Green fodder gives vitamins and keeps the rumen active. Mix it with dry fodder (wheat straw) so she does not get loose dung from too much tender green. Sudden changes upset the rumen, so increase berseem slowly over a week.

For a complete feeding plan, read our guide on dairy feeding and nutrition.

4. Balance the concentrate to her milk

A buffalo giving more milk needs more concentrate (grain, oil cake, bran). Feed it in two or three parts a day, not all at once. In winter she burns extra energy to stay warm, so a buffalo that loses body condition will drop milk first.

5. Do not skip mineral mixture

Minerals are the most common hidden gap in Indian dairy rations. Low minerals show up as lower milk, poor fat, delayed heat and repeat breeding. Buffaloes have their own needs, different from cows. Read more in our buffalo mineral mixture guide.

6. Keep the rumen healthy

The rumen is the buffalo’s engine. When winter feed changes (more berseem, more dry straw, different grain), the rumen microbes need time to adjust. Signs of a struggling rumen are loose or very hard dung, less cud chewing and dropping fat %. A good live yeast culture helps the rumen digest fibre better.

Rumen health

Pyrosach

Rumen-adapted Saccharomyces cerevisiae (10 billion CFU per gram). Improves fibre digestion and rumen health, reduces loose dung, and supports milk, fat and SNF.

Dose: 8–10 g per adult cow or buffalo per day, or 200–300 g per quintal of feed. Mix with feed and soak overnight for best results.

Farms making their own feed can use Rumenia, our dairy feed premix with rumen buffer, prebiotics, probiotics, yeast extracts, toxin binders and trace minerals, at 2.5 kg per 100 kg of feed. It is our most ordered dairy product. See Rumenia.

7. Milk at the same time, fully and gently

  • Fix the milking time and do not change it. Buffaloes are creatures of routine.
  • Milk out completely. Milk left in the udder tells the body to make less.
  • Wash and dry the teats, and keep the sitting area clean. Mastitis cases rise when floors stay wet and cold.

8. Prepare buffaloes that are about to calve

Many buffaloes calve in winter. The first weeks after calving decide the whole lactation. Milk fever and weakness after calving are common when calcium and energy fall suddenly.

  • Before calving: a negative DCAD premix like Chloromate in the last 21 days helps prevent milk fever (buffalo: 1 kg per 100 kg feed, only mixed in feed, stop on the day of calving).
  • At calving: Calcigain drink (1 kg in 40 litres of lukewarm water) restores energy, calcium and electrolytes and brings back appetite.
