A cow or buffalo does not make milk straight from the feed bag. It makes milk from what the rumen microbes build out of that feed. When the rumen is stable, more energy and protein reach the body and the udder. When it is upset, the same feed gives less milk. That is the job of a dairy feed premix, and it is where Rumenia from IMN Pyrophos is used. This guide explains what is on the Rumenia label, the label dose (125 g per animal as top dressing, or 2.5 kg per 100 kg feed), a cost example, how to feed it and what it cannot do. If you are searching for a dairy feed premix to increase milk, start with the dose table below.

What is Rumenia?

Rumenia is a dairy feed premix. The label lists trace minerals, rumen buffer, rumen alkalizer, prebiotics, yeast extracts, probiotics, toxin binders, calcium, phosphorus, rumen fermentation modifiers and propionate enhancers. It is a powder that goes into the feed, as a 2.5 percent premix or as a top dressing. It is not a medicine and it is not a replacement for good fodder.

What does the label say it does?

  • It is a unique blend of supplements made to increase rumen functioning and digestion.
  • It increases the survival and stability of rumen microbes.
  • It enhances rumen fermentation, which increases energy and protein synthesis.
  • That is how production and health of the animal improve.

The IMN product page adds that Rumenia keeps rumen pH stable on high-energy feed, helps build a positive energy balance, binds mycotoxins, reduces ups and downs in milk production, and helps maintain milk in summer or when green fodder is short. It also says Rumenia makes about 200 g of extra metabolizable protein, which supports milk fat and SNF.

Why the rumen decides your milk

The rumen holds billions of microbes. They break down fibre and starch into energy (volatile fatty acids) and also multiply to form microbial protein, which the cow digests later. Milk, fat and SNF all depend on this energy and protein. High grain feeding, sudden feed changes, heat, mouldy feed and low fibre make the rumen acidic and unstable, and then the microbes cannot work well. A premix such as Rumenia gives buffers, yeast, probiotics and fermentation support so the microbes stay healthy even when the ration is rich. Rumenia dose (label)

The label gives two ways to use Rumenia. Both are label doses.

MethodDose (label)
Mixed in the feed2.5 kg per 100 kg feed
Top dressing125 g per animal, sprinkled on the feed

Cost example (calculated from the label dose and the pack price). The 5 kg pack is ₹1,400, so Rumenia costs about ₹280 per kg and 125 g is about ₹35. On the 25 kg pack of ₹5,625 it is about ₹225 per kg and 125 g is about ₹28. For feed mixing, 2.5 kg per 100 kg feed costs about ₹700 on the 5 kg pack or about ₹563 on the 25 kg pack. As a check, 125 g is the same as 2.5 kg per 100 kg when an animal eats about 5 kg of feed. The label does not give a number of days, so ask on WhatsApp how long to run it for your herd.

How to give Rumenia, step by step

  1. Choose the method. A mixer or a TMR wagon: mix at 2.5 kg per 100 kg feed. Hand feeding in the manger: top dress 125 g per animal.
  2. Weigh the powder with a kitchen scale or a marked scoop. Do not pour by eye.
  3. Mix evenly into the concentrate or TMR so every animal gets the same amount.
  4. Introduce it with the normal feed and keep fresh water ready at all times.
  5. Record the milk, fat and SNF each week, and keep the ration the same during the trial so you can see the change.

When Rumenia helps most

  • High-energy rations: where grain is heavy and the rumen pH drops.
  • Peak and early lactation: when the animal needs more energy and protein than it can eat.
  • Summer or green fodder shortage: to help keep milk steady.
  • Feed with toxin risk: the label lists toxin binders, useful in the rainy season when feed gets damp. It does not make mouldy feed safe, so throw bad feed away.
  • Herds with ups and downs in milk: a stable rumen gives a more even yield.

Rumenia, minerals and other products

Rumenia does not replace a good mineral mixture. Keep a balanced daily mineral such as Pyromin, and read our guide to the best mineral mixture for cow and buffalo. For low fat, check fibre first, then see Acetomax. In winter, add warm water, dry bedding and energy as in our winter care of dairy cows. A goat version, Rumenia Goat, is also sold. Ask on WhatsApp for the goat dose.

What not to do

  • Do not expect Rumenia to fix poor fodder, dirty water or a sick animal.
  • Do not change the dose on your own. Use the label dose.
  • Do not feed mouldy or wet feed because a toxin binder is in the premix.
  • Do not change the whole ration on the same day you start. Change one thing at a time.
  • Do not judge it in two days. Compare the weekly average.

Common mistakes

  • Uneven mixing. A small dose must be spread through the whole batch, or some animals get none.
  • Using it as a shortcut for fibre. A cow needs long, coarse fibre to chew cud.
  • Judging from one day’s milk. Morning and evening milk and daily values move. Use a weekly average.
  • Stopping at the first slow day. Rumen changes need days to a few weeks.
