Chalky white deposits on the heart, liver and joints, swollen feet and a flock that drinks less and sits dull: this is gout, and it is one of the costliest kidney problems on a poultry farm. Gout happens when uric acid and urates, which the kidneys should flush out, settle inside the body instead. This guide explains what causes gout, what to fix first in the shed, and where Goutster, an anti-gout combination from IMN Pyrophos, fits in as a gout treatment for poultry. If you are searching for a gout treatment in poultry, start with the water and the feed, because the tonic works best after those are right.

What is gout in poultry?

Birds do not pass urine like mammals. Their kidneys remove waste as uric acid, which does not dissolve well in water. When the kidneys are overloaded or damaged, or the bird is short of water, urates build up and crystallise. Two forms are seen:

  • Visceral gout: white chalky urates coat the heart sac, liver, air sacs and kidneys. Birds often die suddenly, and the problem is found only at post-mortem.
  • Articular gout: urates collect in the joints and foot pads. Hocks and toes swell, and the bird limps or sits down.

The product page says that when the kidneys are overloaded, insoluble products like urates can settle in the kidney or other organs, causing gout or kidney stones (urolithiasis).

What causes gout in broilers and layers?

  • Too little water. Blocked nipples, hot or very cold water, dirty drinkers and low water intake in the first days all concentrate the urates.
  • High protein feed. A pre-starter ration is rich in protein, and the kidneys have to clear more uric acid. Our winter broiler brooding guide shows how to get chicks drinking from day 1.
  • Kidney damage from infection. Viruses such as nephropathogenic infectious bronchitis and Astrovirus (avian nephritis), and diseases such as IBD and IBH, can injure the kidney.
  • Toxins. Mycotoxins in feed, including oosporein, harm the kidney. See our guide on liver tonic for poultry and toxicity for the feed side.
  • Mineral imbalance. Too much calcium for the age, especially in young chicks, strains the kidney. A shortage of vitamin A also weakens the lining of the kidney tubes.
  • Some medicines used at a high dose or for too long can load the kidney. Always keep to your vet’s advice.

What to fix first on the farm

  1. Check water. Count birds at drinkers, flush lines, clean the tank and keep water cool in summer and not icy in winter.
  2. Check the feed. Confirm protein, calcium and vitamin A against the age with your nutritionist, and look for damp or mouldy lots.
  3. Get a post-mortem. White deposits on the heart and kidneys confirm gout. Your vet can then look for the cause, such as infection or toxin.
  4. Do not add extra calcium to a flock with gout or swollen kidneys.
  5. Keep records of deaths, water intake and feed intake by day.

What is Goutster?

LayersAsk on WhatsApp for the dose for your layer flock

Cost example (calculated from the 500 g price of ₹470, about ₹0.94 per gram). For 1,000 chicks in the first week at 20 to 30 g you need ₹19 to ₹28. For 1,000 broilers at 150 to 180 g you need about ₹141 to ₹169 for the amount given in one day. The label says to give it for 3 to 5 days, so plan the total for your own course. The label also notes that the powder can turn hard because it absorbs moisture, and that the hardness does not affect quality.

How to give Goutster, step by step

  1. Weigh the powder with a kitchen scale. Do not measure by spoon.
  2. Dissolve it in the drinking water the birds will finish in the day. Stir well.
  3. Give for 3 to 5 days at the label dose, or as your vet advises.

Gout me kya karein: pehle paani aur feed, post-mortem, Goutster ki matra chooze aur broiler ke liye

A simple gout plan for a flock

  1. Stop the loss. Fix water supply and remove any damp feed lot at once.
  2. Get a post-mortem on two or three fresh dead birds to confirm visceral or articular gout.
  3. Start kidney support with Goutster at the label dose, and keep water intake high.
  4. Add a kidney flusher where the kidney is swollen. Read our guide on kidney flusher for poultry (Nephrowin).
  5. Check calcium and protein in the ration with your nutritionist.
  6. Track results for the next 5 days: water use, droppings colour and deaths.

What not to do

  • Do not give extra calcium or a calcium tonic to a flock that has gout.
  • Do not wait for deaths. Act when water intake falls or droppings turn white and pasty.
  • Do not use Goutster as a replacement for clean water.
  • Do not give an antibiotic without your vet, and keep to the withdrawal period.
  • Do not guess the dose. Weigh it.

Common mistakes

  • Blaming the medicine. Most gout starts with water and feed, not with the bottle.
  • Stopping after one day. The label course is 3 to 5 days.
  • Ignoring the first week. Pre-starter is high in protein, so chicks that do not drink early are at risk.
  • No post-mortem. Without one you cannot tell gout from other diseases.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gout treatment in poultry? There is no single bottle. The best plan is clean, plentiful water, a balanced ration, a post-mortem to find the cause, and kidney support such as Goutster.

What is Goutster used for? It is an anti-gout combination that increases water intake, helps dissolve uric acid so it is flushed out and supports the kidney.

What does Goutster contain? Tri-potassium citrate, tri-sodium citrate, sodium carbonate and vitamin C in an organic carrier.
