CFCR full form is Corrected Feed Conversion Ratio. It is the number integration companies and good farmers use to compare one broiler batch with another fairly, even when the birds were sold at different weights. Plain FCR always looks worse in a heavier batch, because a bigger bird eats more feed per kg of gain. CFCR corrects for that. Below you will find the formula, a worked example, what a good CFCR is, and a free calculator: put in your chicks, birds sold, weight and feed, and it does the maths.

General formula for farmers to check their own performance. Your company may use a different standard weight and factor: change the two boxes to match.

FCR and CFCR: the formulas

FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio) tells you how many kg of feed the flock ate to make 1 kg of live weight.

FCR = total feed used (kg) ÷ total live weight sold (kg)

CFCR (Corrected FCR) brings every batch to the same standard weight, so a 2.3 kg batch and a 1.8 kg batch can be compared on one scale.

CFCR = FCR + (standard weight − actual average weight) × correction factor

  • Average weight = total live weight sold ÷ number of birds sold.
  • Standard weight: the base weight you compare at. 2.0 kg is common; some companies use 2.2 kg or another base.
  • Correction factor: how much FCR changes for every 1 kg of weight difference. A common figure is 0.25 per kg (the same as 0.025 for every 100 g). Companies use anything from about 0.2 to 0.3.

If your birds are heavier than the standard, CFCR comes out lower than FCR. If they are lighter, CFCR comes out higher.

Worked example

ItemValue
Chicks placed5,000
Birds sold4,800 (mortality 4%)
Total live weight sold10,080 kg
Total feed used16,130 kg (about 323 bags of 50 kg)
Average weight10,080 ÷ 4,800 = 2.100 kg
FCR16,130 ÷ 10,080 = 1.600
CFCR (standard 2.0 kg, factor 0.25)1.600 + (2.0 − 2.1) × 0.25 = 1.600 − 0.025 = 1.575

The birds were 100 g heavier than the standard, so the corrected figure is a little better than the plain FCR.

What is a good CFCR?

As a rough guide for commercial broilers in India, at a 2.0 kg standard and a 0.25 factor:

CFCRMeaning
1.55 or lowerExcellent
1.56 to 1.65Good
1.66 to 1.75Average: there is money to save
Above 1.75High: find the cause before the next batch

Chick breed, feed quality, season and your company’s own standard all shift these numbers. Compare your batches with each other and with your company’s average, not only with a table.

Why CFCR matters for your earnings

Feed is about 65–70% of the cost of growing a broiler. On 10,000 kg of live weight, every 0.1 drop in FCR saves about 1,000 kg of feed. In integration farming, most companies pay the growing charge on a CFCR slab, so a lower CFCR directly means a higher payment per kg. Use our broiler integration earnings calculator to see what your CFCR is worth in rupees, and the poultry cost and profit calculator if you run your own birds.

How to bring CFCR down

  • Get brooding right. Chicks that are cold or short of water in week 1 never catch up. See our winter brooding guide.
  • Stop feed wastage. Keep the feeder lip at the bird’s back height, fill feeders only one-third, and fix spilling pans. Wasted feed counts as eaten in your FCR.
  • Keep the gut healthy. Loose droppings, coccidiosis and necrotic enteritis mean feed passes out undigested. See wet litter and loose droppings.
  • Cut mortality, especially late mortality. A bird that dies at day 35 has eaten 3 kg of feed and gives no weight.
  • Control cold and ammonia in winter. Birds burn feed to keep warm. See the winter broiler management guide.
  • Sell on time. FCR rises every extra day the birds stay in the shed after target weight.
  • Weigh feed and birds correctly. Count every bag that came in and went back, and use the real weighing slips. A wrong number gives a wrong CFCR.

Common mistakes when calculating CFCR

  • Using the number of chicks placed instead of birds sold to work out average weight
  • Forgetting the feed still lying in the shed or returned to the company
  • Comparing your CFCR with a neighbour who uses a different standard weight or factor
  • Adding the weight of dead birds to the live weight sold

Quick answers

What is the full form of CFCR? Corrected Feed Conversion Ratio.

What is the difference between FCR and CFCR? FCR is feed ÷ weight as it is. CFCR adjusts FCR to one standard bird weight so batches sold at different weights can be compared.

Which factor should I use? The one in your integration agreement. If you do not have one, 0.25 per kg at a 2.0 kg standard is a sensible general choice.

What is PEF in the calculator? Production Efficiency Factor: livability % × average weight (kg) ÷ (age in days × FCR) × 100. It puts growth, mortality and FCR in one number. Above 300 is good; above 350 is very good.

Disclaimer: this is a general formula that farmers can use to check their own performance. Your company may use a different standard weight and correction factor; you can change the values in the calculator to match your company.
