How to Make Liquid Calcium for Cattle, Goats & Poultry

Calcium is the most abundant mineral element in the animal body. It is an important constituent of the skeleton and teeth, in which about 99 per cent of the total body calcium is found; it is also an essential constituent of living cells and tissue fluids. Calcium is essential for the activity of a number of enzyme systems, including those necessary for the transmission of nerve impulses and for the contractile properties of muscle. It is also concerned in the coagulation of blood. In blood, the element occurs in the plasma; the plasma of mammals usually contains 80–120 mg calcium/l, but that of laying hens contains more (300–400 mg/l).

Extracellular calcium is essential for the formation of skeletal tissues, the transmission of nervous tissue impulses, excitation of skeletal and cardiac muscle contraction, blood clotting, and as a component of milk. Intracellular calcium, while 1/10,000 of the concentration of extracellular calcium, is involved in the activity of a wide array of enzymes and serves as an essential second messenger conveying information from the surface of the cell to the interior of the cell.

The skeleton is not a stable unit in the chemical sense, since large amounts of the calcium and phosphorus in bone can be liberated by reabsorption. This takes place particularly during lactation and egg production, although the exchange of calcium and phosphorus between bones and soft tissue is always a continuous process. The resorption of calcium is controlled by the action of the parathyroid gland. If animals are fed on a low-calcium diet, the ionic calcium concentration in the extracellular fluid falls, the parathyroid gland is stimulated and the hormone produced causes the resorption of bone, liberating calcium to meet the requirements of the animal. Since calcium is combined with phosphorus in bone, the phosphorus is also liberated and excreted by the animal.

Liquid calcium is easy way to feed calcium in animals. It can be given in water or over the feed and it is easily absorb in the intestine. At the time of calving blood calcium level falls down and liquid calcium can be easily fulfil that gap due to its higher bioavailability.

Benefits

  • Calcium and phosphorus can be easily given – dispensation is easy
  • Energy sources like sugar or gud can be dissolved to give kick start rumen function
  • Vitamin D3, B12 and Biotin (H) can also be mixed, other vitamins can also e mixed.
  • Minerals are not easy to fed they can be be mixed in liquid calcium and easily feed to animals.
  • Flavors can be mixed and spread over feed to increase their palpability.

In the market, liquid calcium is available easily but is a little costlier due to which farmers do not feed it regularly. If it becomes cheaper than the farmer can give it regularly and his animals become healthier and give more milk.

Let us learn how it can be made at home – example of 1 litre calcium.

For making liquid calcium following ingredients are required

  • Calcium source = 100g (mixture of calcium monophosphate, calcium dichloride and calcium propionate)
  • Sugar or gud powder = 100 to 150g (add it as per your requirement, it make liquid calcium sweet and it increase taste)
  • Gud is very good choice but mixing time in case of gud should be higher. It is best to add gud and sugar in ratio of 50-50%)
  • Acidifier = 20g (acetic acid or citric acid can be mixed) if you do not find anything you can mix white vinegar that is used in chowmeen making or simply sirka in same quantity.
  • Vitamin D3 – 100,000 IU (optional)
  • Vitamin H (Biotin) – 10mg (optional)
  • Vitamin B12 – 10mcg (liver extract can be added)
  • Glycerol – 30ml
  • Preservatives & blending agent– 20g
  • Mineral mixture – 20-50g (Chromium, Boron, Selenium, Iron, Manganese, Magnesium, Copper, Zinc, Cobalt & Iodine) – if you mix 50g of this you will not need to feed any mineral mixture. You can add these mineral separately. But this is optional.
  • Colour – 1g (any food color of your choice)
  • Flavor – vanilla o mango or strawberry or banana can be mixed as per label instructions, If you are mixing gud no need of flavour.

This liquid calcium is equally good for all domestic, and pet animals as well as for poultry and fancy birds like pigeons.
