From 4 October 2026, OMFED, the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation, has raised the retail price of its packet milk across Odisha. Toned milk now costs ₹58 a litre instead of ₹54, and premium and Gold Plus milk are up by ₹2 a litre each. The consumer price rise comes about three weeks after OMFED increased the price it pays dairy farmers for milk by ₹2 per litre, effective 11 September. The federation pointed to costlier cattle feed and other inputs, along with higher transport expenses, as the reasons for both moves.

Why OMFED raised milk prices

The order of events matters here. OMFED first raised the procurement price paid to its farmer members by ₹2 a litre from 11 September. The federation said the step was meant to support farmers’ income and keep milk coming in steadily to its collection network at a time when feed and other inputs have become more expensive.

Paying farmers more raises OMFED’s own cost of milk, and the federation also faces higher transport bills to move milk from villages to plants and packets to markets. The retail increase from 4 October helps cover these costs. Toned milk, the most widely bought variety, saw the largest jump at ₹4 a litre, while premium and Gold Plus rose by ₹2.

Alongside the price change, OMFED is working on QR codes for its dairy products. Scanning a code would show the date and place of production, how long the product can be used and how to use it. This should make it easier to trace milk back through the supply chain. The challenge for the federation is to balance fair returns for farmers, steady procurement and a price consumers can still afford while operating costs stay high.

What it means for dairy farmers

For farmers who pour milk to OMFED societies, the ₹2 per litre increase is already in force since 11 September. A farmer supplying 10 litres a day earns about ₹20 more each day, or roughly ₹600 a month. The retail hike does not add a further amount to the farmer rate, but it makes the higher procurement price easier for OMFED to sustain.

The reason OMFED gave for the hike is the same pressure farmers feel: cattle feed costs more. A ₹2 rise may cover only part of the extra spending on daana and fodder, so profit per litre depends on how carefully feed is used. The planned QR traceability also points to a future where the source and quality of milk are more visible, which makes clean milk and steady quality more valuable.

What farmers should do now

  • Check your payment slips from 11 September onwards and confirm the ₹2 per litre increase is being paid. Raise any gap with your society.
  • Calculate your cost per litre each month (feed, fodder, labour, vet care) to see whether the new rate covers your rising feed bill.
  • Stop feed waste: chaff fodder before feeding, use clean troughs, and feed concentrate according to each animal’s milk yield, not the same amount to all.
  • Give a daily mineral mixture so the animal turns feed into milk better. Read more in our dairy feeding and nutrition guide.
  • Keep milk clean: wash hands and udders, use clean steel vessels and deliver milk to the centre quickly to protect fat, SNF and quality.
  • Ask your society whether it can arrange cattle feed or fodder in bulk at a better rate.
